discovering Her strength
Our Impact
championing Her dreams
Founding of ActivateHer
For over 7 years, ActivateHer has developed sport for development programmes for girls growing up in underserved communities in Cape Town, South Africa. Acknowledging the gender divide that still persists around sporting opportunities due to gender roles, ActivateHer uses sports as a platform to advance girls’ life skills, health and wellbeing, and leadership potential. Programmes start from girls point of entry into schooling at the age of 3, and annual programmes through to high school, ensuring girls have pathways to play.
Play is the cornerstone of childhood development. It nurtures creativity, social skills, and cognitive growth in the crucial formative years.
ActivateHer invests in girls, knowing that every girl already possesses the strength to make a lasting impact on the world.

Our Multi-Sport Approach
By the time girls hit puberty, 65% of them drop out of participation in sport — and that is if sports programmes are even made accessible to them.
We cannot have girls stop playing before they even get the chance to start. That is why ActivateHer takes a multi-sport approach to sport, where we make use of both traditional and non-traditional sports, to break down gender stereotypes associated with certain games, and also help girls sport sample to discover what they enjoy and all of the different skills they already possess.
And there is a lot of fun in never knowing what sports activity your going to play in class day to day!
Some traditional sports we play:
Netball, soccer, cricket, athletics, basketball
Some non-traditional sports. we play:
Yoga, boxing, tennis, volleyball, traditional games
